IT Courses “Reassuringly Pricey?

The late comedienne Linda Smith once laughed, “I love Waitrose – it’s that little bit more expensive.

Sad but true, until the recent global financial panic, everyone it seems were sold the view that “It must be good if it costs that much, or You get what you pay for. Advertisers perpetuated the myth – imagine the luscious shots on the M&S ads, with “This is not ordinary food, this is…. On the other hand, the supermarkets Value or Basic ranges were acknowledged by the penny pinchers but barely noticed by you and me.

In Computer training, expensive companies (surely they’re superior - if you have the funds - why else would these companies be market leaders?) convinced us that colleges exist who’ll teach IT less expensively but be careful, it won’t be as good.

Then the world takes a couple of turns, we hover on the brink of financial meltdown, and all at once value is all the rage! Middle class mummies abandon Waitrose, and instead discover the delights of Aldi and Lidl. Stockbrokers and their large bonuses are out of favour, and we all re-evaluate what we buy.

Have we been fooled by companies charging more? Further investigation into the country’s IT training market, and there’s a lot to discover. Just because industry’s crying out for more skilled programmers and networking professionals, is it essential to fork out 5k–8k to be trained in these skills, or are we missing something better? It’s a bit much that many IT trainers are preaching one thing whilst practicing another - supplying a workforce for the digital age using pen and paper methods. Why do students have to read through books when all information can be downloaded onto discs? Is it necessary to drive to training centres, spending more money for our overnights to do what we could do at home? 24/7 Interactive training should be available for me when and where it works best for me – at my convenience, but not at my cost.

With more comprehensive, user friendly training options around now at less than half these prices, maybe it’s time we woke up to the fact that when it comes to electronic learning, value means lower cost for higher quality. We’re moving on in IT training – in marketing terminology, it’s “Simply Value prices, for “Best Ever products. In this knowledge hungry world we live in, bring it on.
